Inverse matrices: the epic way

August 21, 2011

In 9th grade, we were taught how to find a square matrix’ inverse: write your matrix on the left side and the identity matrix on the right side:

(your matrix here)     |   1  0  0

(your matrix here)     |   0  1  0

(your matrix here)     |   0  0  1

then perform row operations until the left side becomes the identity matrix. Whatever is on the right side will be your answer: the inverse.

I, however, found an ingenious way to go around the calculations: just rotate your paper by 180 degrees! What’s so hard about linear algebra anyways?

1  0  0  |

0  1  0  | (TA-DA! INVERSE GET!)

0  0  1  |
